The River, Jez Butterworth’s first new play after his smash hit ‘Jerusalem’ finds the perfect space at The Green Room.

‘THE RIVER’ by Jez Butterworth, is set in a remote cabin besides a river belonging to ‘The Man’, a dedicated fisherman who has invited his new love ‘The Woman’ to share his passion and excitement for catching sea trout. Our staycation couple are there on a mysterious moonless night, a once-a-year occurrence when folklore has it that the sea trout can be caught in abundance. It’s an intimate and surprising play ideally suited to the close confines of The Green Rooms unique studio theatre space and the play’s many twists and turns leaves the audience to work out quite what they are watching – is it a parable, a gothic thriller or a ghost story? The play runs at The Green Room Theatre, Wilmslow from Saturday 21st to 28th January 2023. Tickets now on sale at the theatre’s website: www.greenroomwilmslow.org.uk

Jez Butterworth is probably best known for his smash hit play ‘Jerusalem’ (2009) which received rave reviews after it opened at The Royal Court Theatre, starring Mark Rylance as Johnny “Rooster” Byron. The play has since been described as ‘the greatest British play of the 21st Century’.

Butterworth’s story in ‘The River’ twists and turns from one reality to another and at the very moment the audience think they have grasped and understood the man and the woman’s love affair, it’s all pulled from their grasp as one reality evaporates and another, even more seductive and mysterious one takes its place.

Director Mike Rogerson comments: “Jez Butterworth’s plays are infused with beautiful, poetic images. In The River, he has created a bewitching story which keeps the audience on tenterhooks in which the fisherman’s love affair with the secretive trout who elude him is likened to the elusive and transitory nature of human love.”
